# What is Event count?

Event count is the number of times an event was triggered in [Google Analytics 4](/glossary/ga4) during the selected period. Since GA4 measures everything as events, page views, clicks, scrolls, video plays and purchases are all counted with the same metric.

## Why it matters

It is the raw unit of GA4\. Every other engagement number is built from it: a page view is a page\_view event, a conversion is an event you marked as a key event, a session is a session\_start event followed by the rest.

## How to read it

The common misreading is treating event count as people: one visitor can fire the same event fifty times. Pair it with event count per user or with total users, and check which events are automatically collected, which come from enhanced measurement and which are custom, because the three arrive with different reliability.

## In a Data Studio report

In a Data Studio (formerly [Looker Studio](/glossary/looker-studio)) report events appear as a table of event names with their count and, for the ones marked as [key events](/glossary/key-events), their conversion count and value. The page that tracks user interaction usually shows the top events over time next to [engagement rate](/glossary/engagement-rate).
