# What is Keyword ranking report?

A [keyword ranking](/glossary/keyword-ranking) report is a document or dashboard that shows which search queries a site appears for, at what position, and how those positions change over time. A useful one pairs each ranking with its [impressions](/glossary/impressions), clicks and [CTR](/glossary/ctr) so movement can be tied to actual traffic.

| Query | Position | Clicks | Change |
| ------------------- | -------- | ------ | ------ |
| seo dashboard | 4.2 | 318 | ▲ 2 |
| seo report template | 7.8 | 96 | ▲ 5 |
| rank tracker | 11.4 | 31 | ▼ 1 |
| keyword report | 15.0 | 12 | ▲ 3 |

The report lines up every query with its position, clicks and change.

## Why it matters

The report is usually built on Google Search Console data, segmented into brand and generic queries so growth in brand searches does not mask losses in generic ones.

## How to read it

A common mistake is reporting only the [average position](/glossary/average-position) of the whole site: one page gaining hundreds of new low-ranking queries drags the average down while the site is actually growing. Reports that group keywords by page, intent and brand/generic avoid that trap, and pairing every position with its clicks shows whether a ranking is worth defending.

## In a Data Studio report

Built in Data Studio (formerly [Looker Studio](/glossary/looker-studio)), the report typically has four sections: a summary scorecard row, a brand versus generic split, a query table with period-over-period deltas, and a position-distribution chart. Because the report reads Search Console directly, the same link serves every month: the numbers refresh themselves and the layout stays consistent for the client.

## Where to find it in Google Search Console

Search Console: Performance, then Search results, exported with Queries and Pages; the buckets (top 3, 4 to 10, 11 to 20) are computed in the report, not in Search Console.
