# What is Keyword ranking?

Keyword ranking is the position a page occupies in the search results for a specific query; position 1 is the top organic result. Rankings are tracked per keyword and per page, and move constantly as search engines re-evaluate content.

## Why it matters

In Google Search Console the metric is reported as [average position](/glossary/average-position): the mean ranking across every impression the query generated in the period, which is why it rarely shows a round number.

## How to read it

In practice, rankings are personalised and volatile: the same query can return different positions depending on location, device and search history, which is why rank-tracking tools query from neutral locations and why two people rarely see identical results. When reading a ranking report, the trend over weeks matters more than any single day's position.

## In a Data Studio report

In a Data Studio (formerly [Looker Studio](/glossary/looker-studio)) report, rankings usually appear as a table of queries with their average position, clicks and [impressions](/glossary/impressions), plus a time series showing how the tracked positions move. The strongest setups add a position-distribution chart, how many keywords sit in the top 3, positions 4 to 10, and beyond, because that shape changes before total traffic does.

## Where to find it in Google Search Console

Search Console: Performance, then Search results, with Average position enabled; per query in the Queries tab, per page in the Pages tab.
