# What is Long-tail keywords?

Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific search queries, usually four words or more, that each have low search volume but together make up most of a site's search traffic. Short-tail keywords are the one-to-three-word queries with high volume and high competition.

| -------------------------------------- | ----- | ------ | ---- |
| seo report | 2 | 12,400 | 1.1% |

## Why it matters

The tail is where a smaller site wins. Nobody outranks a global brand for "[seo report](/glossary/seo-report)", but "seo report template for agencies data studio" is a query with a clear intent and a page that answers it can take it.

## How to read it

Measure the tail by word count, which is what a report can compute, and read the split with its [CTR](/glossary/ctr): long-tail queries typically show higher click-through and better positions because they match the page more closely. A tail that grows in keywords but not in clicks is appearing, not winning.

## In a Data Studio report

In a Data Studio (formerly [Looker Studio](/glossary/looker-studio)) report keyword length is a computed dimension over Search Console queries: a short-tail versus long-tail split with keyword counts, a breakdown by number of words, and a page per length type listing the queries with [impressions](/glossary/impressions), clicks, CTR and position.

## Where to find it in Google Search Console

Search Console: Performance, then Search results, then Queries, filtered with a regular expression for four or more words; the split by word count is computed in the report.
