# What is SEO performance?

SEO performance is how well a website earns visibility and visits from organic search, measured as a chain rather than a single number: [impressions](/glossary/impressions), clicks, [click-through rate](/glossary/ctr) and [average position](/glossary/average-position) in Search Console, and the [sessions](/glossary/sessions) and conversions those clicks produce in [Google Analytics 4](/glossary/ga4).

| Metric | This period | Previous | Change |
| ------------- | ----------- | -------- | ------ |
| Impressions | 48,200 | 41,900 | ▲ 15% |
| Clicks | 1,310 | 1,120 | ▲ 17% |
| CTR | 2.7% | 2.7% | 0% |
| Avg. position | 9.4 | 10.8 | ▲ 1.4 |

Four numbers, one screen: impressions, clicks, CTR and position.

## Why it matters

The chain matters because each link can move alone. Impressions grow while clicks fall when a new SERP feature pushes results down; clicks grow while conversions fall when the traffic is the wrong intent. A single "SEO score" hides exactly the link that broke.

## How to read it

Read it in three splits: brand against generic queries, because brand traffic reflects marketing elsewhere and not SEO work; pages against queries, because a page can lose one query and gain another; and year over year, because most sites have seasonality that a month-over-month view mistakes for a change.

## In a Data Studio report

In a Data Studio (formerly [Looker Studio](/glossary/looker-studio)) report SEO performance is the overview page: the four Search Console metrics with their trend, organic sessions and [key events](/glossary/key-events) from GA4 beside them, and the brand versus generic split. The pages after it explain the overview, page by page and keyword by keyword.

## Where to find it in Google

Search Console: Performance, then Search results (clicks, impressions, CTR, position); Google Analytics 4: Reports, then Acquisition, filtered to Organic Search.
