Web analytics report example

# How they find you, and _what they do next._

Search visibility on one side, on-site behaviour on the other: a web analytics report is only complete when both halves share a page.

In plain terms

## What a web analytics report is

A web analytics report in Data Studio (formerly [Looker Studio](/glossary/looker-studio)) describes a website from both ends: how people find it and what they do on it. The first half is search visibility, which lives in Google Search Console: queries, [impressions](/glossary/impressions), clicks and positions. The second is behaviour, which lives in [Google Analytics 4](/glossary/ga4): [sessions](/glossary/sessions), engagement, landing pages and conversions. A report that shows only one half explains only half of the traffic.

This template puts the two halves on one Data Studio report, read live from your own properties. The discovery pages show which queries open the door and to which pages; the behaviour pages show what happened after the click; the join is a table where each [landing page](/glossary/landing-page) carries both its search performance and its on-site results. [Smart Interpretations](/glossary/smart-interpretations) narrates the movement so the report reads as a report.

* Who opens it
* ### Website owners
The whole picture of the site's traffic in one place, from the Google search to the conversion, without switching tools.
* ### Content and SEO teams
Which queries bring visitors to which pages, and whether those visitors engaged: the data that decides what to write next.
* ### Agencies
A monthly web analytics report per client that assembles itself, with the analysis written inside.

## 27 pages. These 12 do the work of a web analytics report.

Each one photographed from the live template, with what it is for and the fields it reads. Every field links to its definition; every page opens in the live report above.

1. Page 1 of 27
### Web overview
The eight headline numbers with their deltas and the device, channel and city splits underneath: the five-second answer to “is this working” that a client should get without scrolling.
Reads: [Total Users](/reference/ga4-fields#totalUsers) · [Sessions](/glossary/sessions) · [Bounce Rate](/glossary/bounce-rate) · [Av. Session Dur.](/glossary/average-session-duration) · [Key Events](/glossary/key-events)
2. Page 2 of 27
### Page content
Every page ranked by views, sessions, bounce and key events with page-path search: where content strategy meets evidence.
Reads: [Page Views](/reference/ga4-fields#screenPageViews) · [Pages / Session](/reference/ga4-fields#screenPageViews) · [Pages / User](/reference/ga4-fields#screenPageViews) · [Avg. Session Dur.](/glossary/average-session-duration) · [Views](/reference/ga4-fields#screenPageViews)
3. Page 3 of 27
### Landing page
Entry points ranked by the traffic they attract and the behaviour that follows, plotted over time. The bridge between a ranking on the search side and an outcome on the traffic side.
Reads: [Sessions](/glossary/sessions) · [Views](/reference/ga4-fields#screenPageViews) · [Bounce rate](/glossary/bounce-rate) · [Key events](/glossary/key-events) · [Landing page](/glossary/landing-page)
4. Page 7 of 27
### Conversions
Every key event counted and trended, with its rate and the revenue attached, broken out by device, channel and location. The section a retainer conversation ends on.
Reads: [Key Events](/glossary/key-events) · [Event Count](/glossary/event-count) · [Key Event Rate](/reference/ga4-fields#sessionKeyEventRate) · [Total Revenue](/reference/ga4-fields#totalRevenue) · [Event name](/reference/ga4-fields#eventName)
5. Page 9 of 27
### Channels
Direct, organic, paid, referral and social in one table with users, key events and revenue per channel, and the organic versus paid area chart an SEO report opens with.
Reads: [Total users](/reference/ga4-fields#totalUsers) · [Sessions](/glossary/sessions) · [Bounce rate](/glossary/bounce-rate) · [Key events](/glossary/key-events) · [Session key event rate](/reference/ga4-fields#sessionKeyEventRate)
6. Page 10 of 27
### Organic
Organic pulled out of the channel mix and measured on its own terms, filterable down to a single page path. What the SEO work produced, separated from everything it shares the site with.
Reads: [Total Users](/reference/ga4-fields#totalUsers) · [Sessions](/glossary/sessions) · [Bounce Rate](/glossary/bounce-rate) · [Av. Session Dur.](/glossary/average-session-duration) · [Key events](/glossary/key-events)
7. Page 14 of 27
### Growth timeline
Twelve months of the traffic side with the best day, week, month and quarter picked out automatically. The long view a renewal conversation opens with, before the search timeline seven pages later shows whether visibility moved first.
Reads: [Sessions](/glossary/sessions) · [Total users](/reference/ga4-fields#totalUsers) · [Key Events](/glossary/key-events) · [Bounce rate](/glossary/bounce-rate) · [Views](/reference/ga4-fields#screenPageViews)
8. Page 15 of 27
### Search overview
Impressions, clicks, tracked keywords, site CTR and average position from Search Console: how Google sees the site, next to what visitors did about it.
Reads: [Impressions](/glossary/impressions) · [Clicks](/reference/google-search-console-fields#clicks) · [Keywords count](/glossary/unique-keywords) · [Site CTR](/glossary/ctr) · [Average Position](/glossary/average-position)
9. Page 16 of 27
### Brand vs generic
Branded queries split from generic demand, each with its own keywords, CTR and position and a written interpretation of the trend. If most organic traffic is branded, SEO is not doing what the aggregate suggests; this page keeps that honest.
Reads: [Impressions](/glossary/impressions) · [Clicks](/reference/google-search-console-fields#clicks) · [Site CTR](/glossary/ctr) · [Average Position](/glossary/average-position) · [Brand Keywords](/glossary/brand-vs-generic-keywords)
10. Page 19 of 27
### Keyword analysis
Every query with impressions, clicks, CTR and position, searchable and grouped by length: the working table where individual rankings get investigated.
Reads: [Impressions](/glossary/impressions) · [Clicks](/reference/google-search-console-fields#clicks) · [Site CTR](/glossary/ctr) · [Average Position](/glossary/average-position) · [Short Tail](/glossary/long-tail-keywords)
11. Page 22 of 27
### Page rankings
Keywords bucketed into top 3, 4 to 10, 11 to 20 and beyond with improved and declined lists: ranking progress made legible before traffic moves.
Reads: [Top 3](/glossary/average-position) · [Top 10](/glossary/average-position) · [Top 20](/glossary/average-position) · [Rest](/glossary/average-position) · [Average Position Last Quarter](/glossary/average-position)

### Search growth timeline

Setup

## How it connects

Each half connects natively: Search Console for the discovery data, GA4 for behaviour, both authorised once in your own Data Studio copy. The report stays live from then on, and sharing works like a Google Doc: a viewer link shows current data without giving anyone access to the underlying properties.

Setup guides that apply

* [Connect GA4, Search Console or Google Ads to your Data Studio template](/support/connect-your-data-sources) · Connect your Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console or Google Ads data to your copy of the Data Studio template in minutes, with Google’s native connectors and no third-party service.

Questions

## Before you ask

Is this the same as the SEO report template?

Same product, different lens: this page describes the full web-analytics use case; the SEO report page describes the search-first one.

Do I need both Search Console and GA4?

The report is built for both. With only one connected, the pages of that source work and the pages of the other stay empty until you connect it.

Can it show more than one website?

One report reads one Search Console property and one GA4 property. For several sites, make one copy per site; copies are unlimited.

How current is the data?

GA4 data arrives within a day and Search Console within two to three days, by Google's design. The report shows whatever each source has when it is opened, and can be refreshed on demand.

Vocabulary

## The terms this report uses

* [Sessions](/glossary/sessions)
A session is a group of interactions one user has with a website within a period of time; in Google Analytics 4 it starts with a session\_start event and ends after 30 minutes of inactivity.
* [Landing page](/glossary/landing-page)
A landing page is the first page a visitor sees in a session, the page that won the visit.
* [Source / medium](/glossary/source-medium)
Source / medium is the pair of dimensions that describes where a session came from: the source is the site or platform (google, facebook, newsletter) and the medium is the type of traffic (organic, cpc, referral, email).
* [Impressions](/glossary/impressions)
An impression is counted each time a link to a site appears in a search results page a user views, whether or not it is clicked.
* [CTR (click-through rate)](/glossary/ctr)
CTR is clicks divided by impressions, expressed as a percentage: the share of times a listing was shown that ended in a click.
* [Engaged sessions](/glossary/engaged-sessions)
Engaged sessions are the sessions in Google Analytics 4 that lasted longer than 10 seconds, produced a key event, or included at least two page or screen views.
* [New vs returning users](/glossary/new-vs-returning-users)
New vs returning users is the Google Analytics 4 dimension that splits visitors by whether their first visit fell inside the selected period (new) or before it (returning).
