Google Analytics 4 · Metric
What is Engaged sessions?
Engaged sessions are the sessions in Google Analytics 4 that lasted longer than 10 seconds, produced a key event, or included at least two page or screen views. They are the numerator of engagement rate and the sessions GA4 treats as real visits rather than accidental ones.
Ten seconds, two pages or a key event: that is an engaged session.

Why it matters
The threshold exists because a large share of traffic is a click and an immediate close. Counting those as visits made every conversion rate look worse than it was; engaged sessions draw the line at ten seconds and let the rest of the report be about people who stayed.
How to read it
The ten seconds can be raised, up to sixty, in the data stream settings under session timeout, and two properties with different settings are not comparable. Engaged sessions per user, the ratio to active users, is the number to watch for returning audiences: above one means people come back and stay.
In a Data Studio report
In a Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) report engaged sessions appear as a scorecard beside sessions, and the pair produces engagement rate. By channel it shows which sources send visits that stay, which is usually a very different ranking from which sources send the most visits.
